Speed Doubler includes three extensions: Speed Emulator (PowerPC only), Speed Access, and Speed Copy.
Before installing Speed Doubler, if your configuration has a PowerPC upgrade card, make sure you are booted in PowerPC mode. The installer does not install Speed Emulator if booted on a 680x0 configuration. Speed Emulator, which is applicable to the PowerPC processor only, automatically disables itself if booting on a 680x0 configuration.
The Speed Doubler Installer automatically sets the disk cache size to 1/16th the amount of physical RAM; if the cache amount is already larger than 1/16th the amount of RAM, it makes no adjustment. You can adjust the size of the disk cache at any time by using the disk cache setting in the Memory control panel.
The Speed Doubler Installer automatically installs the Thread Manager extension on pre-System 7.5 configurations. Thread Manager, which is built-into System 7.5, allows Speed Copy to perform multiple copies simultaneously.
You can disable the Speed Doubler extensions by holding down the Shift key at boot after Welcome to Macintosh appears.
Speed Doubler consists of three extensions - if you suspect a problem, try isolating the problem to a particular Speed Doubler extension (Speed Access, Speed Copy or Speed Emulator) by disabling the other two extensions. All three Speed Doubler extensions function independently of each other. The following sections describe known issues with Speed Doubler extensions.
Speed Emulator is designed only for the Power Macintosh. It is compatible with the PowerPC 601, 603, and 604 processors. Speed Emulator disables itself if booting on a 680x0 configuration.
Alchemy, sound editing music software by Passport Designs, is not compatible with Speed Emulator, or any dynamic recompiling emulator. Passport Designs is aware of the problem and working on a solution.
Sassafras Keyserver users should use version 4.0.3.3 or later. Call Sassafras for an update or you can download the update from:

LaCie Silverlining (drive formatting software) users should use version 5.6.1 or later.
Users of the game "Onslaught" should update to version 1.0.5 or later.
Users of the shareware extension, "Click, there it is", should use the version 1.0.6 or later.
Speed Emulator can be bypassed during the boot process by holding down the Shift key after Welcome to Macintosh.
Speed Access uses the amount of memory allocated to the disk cache in the Memory control panel. The amount is set automatically during Speed Doubler installation and can be adjusted at any time through the disk cache setting in the Memory Control panel.
Photoshop users: Speed Access is "Photoshop Aware". This means that Speed Access understands the disk caching mechanisms used by Photoshop and will let Photoshop handle its own caching when appropriate, regardless of the size of the disk cache. Adobe suggests setting your disk cache to 32k. With Speed Access we recommend you ignore this and set your cache to 1/16 of your physical RAM, and at the very least 128k. Having your disk cache set to 32k can dramatically decrease disk performance for other applications. Using at least 128k for your disk cache helps disk performance.
Stacker, and/or the Stacker Removable Extension, allocate an amount of memory equal to the size of the disk cache setting in the Memory control panel. As a result, system memory requirements increase accordingly; for example, a configuration with a 1024K disk cache allocation and Stacker installed, sees a memory usage of 2048K.
Users of APS PowerTools and Casablanca Works Drive7, should disable these drivers' caching function ('disable driver cache') and leave 'disable System cache' unchecked in the control panel. Drive performance decreases with both Speed Access and driver caching enabled.
Users of sAVe the Disk, a freeware extension for the Centris/Quadra 660AV and 840AV, should upgrade to version 1.5 or later.
Speed Access does not support hard drive partitions larger than 4 gigabytes and will not mount volumes of this size.
Speed Access can be bypassed during the boot process by holding down the Shift key after Welcome to Macintosh.
Files compressed with AutoDoubler, Now Compress, Now QuickFiler (part of Now
Utilities 5.x), and SpaceSaver are decompressed when copied.
Speed Copy disables itself if another copy utility, such as Symantec CopyDoubler, is installed.
Standard Finder copy activates when copying items into the System Folder or from a locked volume to the desktop.
Speed Copy does not copy a mounted DOS disk image.
Users of Optima Technologies DeskTape 2.0, should bypass Speed Copy (hold down Control key when copying) for faster performance when copying to and from a mounted DAT tape.
When copied by Speed Copy, files do not 'always snap-to grid' (an option in the Views control panel).
You can bypass Speed Copy by holding down the control key when copying, duplicating, or empty trash; the Finder will complete the task.
Speed Copy can be bypassed during the boot process by holding down the Shift key after Welcome to Macintosh.
